2020/2021 Auditions in June ~ September 12, 2020

Auditions for the 2020/2021 Season will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2020.

CREW Audition  – 1:30-2:30 PM

Company Audition – 3:00-4:00 PM

What do I need to know to prepare for the audition?
Dancers should arrive at least 15 minutes ahead of the scheduled audition to complete paperwork. Crew auditions will include Hip Hop and Freestyle warm-up and phrase work. Dancers can wear comfortable athletic wear and carry in sneakers to be worn in the studio.  The audition for Company will consist of a Ballet barre, Jazz progressions across the floor, and a Modern/Contemporary phrase including improvisation.  Dancers should wear form-fitting dancewear with hair pulled away from the face. Ballet shoes or socks may be worn for the Ballet barre portion of the class. 

Do my parents need to be there?
Parents are not required to be present, however, they do need to sign a waiver prior to the audition if you are under 18 years of age.

The deadline for the 2020/21 Scholarship Application is Wednesday, September 16, 2020. and is contingent on acceptance into the Portland Youth Dance program. If you have questions please contact kate@portlandyouthdance.com.

About the groups:

PYD Company

The company focuses its work on Contemporary, Modern, and Jazz forms.  Dancers are required to take one Ballet class per week and additional technique classes.  Classes do not need to be taken at Portland Youth Dance’s home studio, Casco Bay Movers.

*Additional technique classes may include:  Modern, Jazz, Contemporary or Ballet.  Company dancers are encouraged to study urban styles such as Hip Hop and Tap, and Crew and Crew II dancers are encouraged to study technique classes in order to increase their depth of knowledge and experience.  Opportunities for working with the various companies within PYD are often presented to provide those proficient in multiple styles the chance to further hone their craft.  

Crew focuses its work around Hip Hop culture, education, and experience.  Dancers are required to take one Hip Hop technique class and one additional supporting class.  Classes do not need to be taken at Portland Youth Dance’s home studio, Casco Bay Movers.

All PYD members are expected to participate in community classes, community building, and fundraising. This supports our mission statement and is expected of all members. Performance, community classes, travel, and additional educational opportunities are offered to all members of PYD.
