Philosophy

Portland Youth Dance was founded in 1998, in recognition of the need to provide intermediate and advanced level young dancers with opportunity for performance without competition. Over the years, PYD has developed and maintains a “No Star, All-Star” philosophy. Dancers are offered opportunities in diverse styles of dance that challenge their abilities while inviting their own creative process to emerge. It is our commitment to recognize that each dancer brings his or her own unique artistic integrity to the company. Each dancer not only feels valued but is valued.

While most of the dancers spend hours per week perfecting their craft, PYD’s expectation is to be the best by allowing every dancer to exhibit their best self, not just as dancers, but as people. They are encouraged to reach out and support younger or less experienced dancers in both the PYD organization and in the greater dance community. They bring their talents into the community where they provide free dance classes through the PYD Community program, for kids who otherwise may not have the opportunity to take formal dance classes. PYD has discovered that there are great rewards to be gained from youth teaching youth. These dancers are giving, but are also getting the invaluable experiences of leadership, team building, and cultivating new friendships.

Portland Youth Dance seeks to cultivate artistic and personal growth for youth while striving for creative excellence in dance. Our expectation is to provide a respectful environment where dancers are challenged to work hard and build character with commitment, passion, and joy.
