The goal of the Community Dance program is to make dance accessible to youth throughout greater Portland. Currently, the program focuses on sending PYD student teachers and professional teachers out into the community to give young blossoming dancers, classroom and performance opportunities. Classes not only benefit those in need but provide PYD members with teaching and choreographic experience, and the opportunity to have a unique and diverse cultural experience while sharing their passion.
Portland Youth Dance Company currently partners with Mayo Street Arts, LearningWorks, STRIVE, and The Boys and Girls Club to bring dance into the heart of the community. In the past, PYD has also partnered with The Center for Grieving Children & The Barbara Bush Children’s hospital.
Portland Youth Dance Company also offers free beginning-level dance classes to children in need in the Greater Portland area. Each Saturday, Company Members teach a dance class at Casco Bay Movers Dance Studio in Portland. Classes incorporate technique, stretching, musicality, and choreography. The program culminates in a performance at the PYD May Show.
